The difference between the two generations is impressive. If in appearance the relationship is still readable, then in terms of technology and interior, these are two different cars. But first things first.
Let’s start with the technical characteristics of the Audi A1. The new generation moved to the new MQB-A0 platform (the predecessor was based on the PQ25). However, in addition to increasing the wheelbase by 94 mm, this did not affect the chassis:
Optionally, the manufacturer offers adaptive shock absorbers, reinforced brakes and a steering rack with the function of changing the gear ratio.
Body
As for the body, then the design bureau should be given its due. The new hatch is one of the most attractive in its class. If the predecessor looked like a typical small car, then the 2nd generation Audi A1 does not catch condescending glances.
Audi A1 is built on the PQ25 platform, in fact it is the same VW Polo mk5, which indirectly already speaks of the simplicity of the car’s design and its reliability. The most complex and problematic nodes are the S-tronic robotic gearbox (DSG) and the TFSI engine, which have a number of their own problems that are common to the entire family of these units. And if the main problem for the motor is its turbine, then in the case of a gearbox, repairs can be difficult and expensive, as with any DSG DQ200, so it’s better to choose a car on mechanics, there will be fewer problems.
1) Knocks due to gearbox supports
Statistically, a fairly large number of Audi A1s have such a problem as atypical crunches, squeaks and taps when driving through bumps or at times of intense starts and braking. A similar symptom speaks strictly about one thing – it is necessary to check the gearbox mounts. The essence of the problem lies in the fact that a contact occurs between the rubber element and the gearbox console, which, under shock loads-concussions (during sharp acceleration / deceleration, as well as on bumps), initiates an unpleasant, well-distinguished sound. Even as part of the warranty, the owners of A1 changed the supports, and over time, a solution appeared at the production stage, which made it possible to get rid of the problem. According to Audi technical specialists, since the 35th week of 2013, a modernized support has been produced, behind which such troubles are not observed.
2) Problems with the turbine
Of course, this is more related to the problems of specific motor models. But nevertheless, on the 1.4 TFSI engine, which is installed on the Audi A1 in different degrees of forcing (from 122 to 185 hp), certain problems with the turbine periodically arise. According to Audi, most often the problem is due to difficult movement of the wastegate flap or difficult rotation of the turbine wastegate flap bearings. In the event of a breakdown, official dealers repaired the dampers using a special repair kit, but in some cases the matter ended with the replacement of the turbocharger. The modification of the turbocharger continued until mid-2015.
3) Knocks “out of the glove box”
At idle, rattling may appear in the area of \u200b\u200bthe glove box from the passenger compartment (also heard under the hood). The fact is that the fuel pipes (supply and return) rattle, which go from under the hood to the tank in the body cavity. The bounce is heard in this box, which is quite difficult to get to. Annoying noise, “living” in the glove box area, spoils the whole feeling of driving and certainly does not correspond to the status of the car – after all, although it is a baby, it is premium.
Everyone describes the nature of the noise in different ways: most often it is characterized as a rattling or tinkling, and in the official Audi dealership it was described as a “ticking”. The manufacturer nevertheless solved the problem: since February 2012, a modified version of the fuel line has been installed on the A1, the tubes of which no longer generate such sounds. Before that, by the way, one of the solutions to the problem was to move the fuel pipe to another fixture (there was a spare in the engine compartment), however, judging by the reviews, this solution did not help everyone. One way or another, on new cars, this problem is no longer relevant.
