The Audi 100 of the C4 family went on sale in December 1990 and became the brand’s first car with a V-shaped 6-cylinder engine. In 1995, after the introduction of a new designation system, it was renamed the Audi A6. Until 1998, the Neckarsulm plant produced 773,847 Audi 100 C4/Audi A6 vehicles.
All modifications, including all-wheel drive quattro, were now equipped with 5-speed manual or 4-band automatic transmissions, all without exception had disc brakes (front – with ventilated discs).
Changed views on the modification of Avant. Previously, the company positioned this body as a Limousinen-Kombi, a cross between a sedan and a station wagon. From now on, its spaciousness was at the forefront. The company was prompted to change by complaints from motorists about the noticeable heating of the passenger compartment through the heavily tilted glass of the fifth door of the Audi 100 C3 Avant.
It was no longer supposed to produce a powerful and expensive modification of the Audi 200, it was replaced by the Audi S4 with a 5-cylinder gasoline 20-valve engine (2.2 l, 169 kW / 230 hp) with a turbocharger or a 4.2-liter V8 (206 kW / 280 hp) in combination with a 5-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Reinforced brakes with ventilated discs with a diameter of 314 mm were installed in the front ones.
