Volkswagen Passat B7

The seventh generation Volkswagen Passat is produced at two factories in Germany, and these cars are also assembled in China and Malaysia. Production started in 2011. Despite the new index, the B7, in fact, is only an updated sixth generation Passat, and not a completely new model, which, for example, became Passat CC. Here you can draw parallels with the Golf 6, made on the platform of the fifth.

The Passat B7 debuted at the Paris Auto Show in September 2010. A group of auto artists led by the head of the Volkswagen design studio, Walter de Silva, worked on the exterior of the car, but it cannot be said that the B7 is radically different from the B6: the design of the front of the car has changed, including optics and radiator grille, new body panels have appeared. The transformations practically did not affect the interior, the dimensions of the car did not change either (plus 4 mm to the length does not count). The seventh Passat entered dealerships in mid-November 2010.

In 2011, its production started in China, and there the B7 was immediately divided into two models. The first, similar to the European version, under the name NMS, is produced by the Shanghai-VW joint venture, and the second by the FAW-VW joint venture. It differs from the German B7 in that the body is extended by 10 cm for greater comfort for passengers in the rear row of seats.

Technical features

Of the new options, the most noticeable was the emergency braking system in the city, the so-called. city emergency braking. It automatically causes the car to slow down if an obstacle is detected dangerously close to the car (in front). This device is called “urban” because it works at speeds only up to 30 km / h.

Also, another “advanced” system is integrated into the seventh Passat, designed to make driving safer. It monitors the driver's condition and, having detected signs of fatigue, warns about this with an audible signal. If the owner of the B7 does not react to the squeak, an unpleasant sound will be heard at intervals of 15 minutes. And for those who spend days in traffic jams or often travel long distances, the seventh Passat every 4 hours will offer to stop and rest. Curiously, this system is included in the standard list of equipment for two trim levels, and in the third, the most budget one, it is available as an option for an additional fee.

In addition, the B7 is equipped with a twelve-sensor Park Assist system. Parallel parking is carried out by the car itself, the driver only needs to press the gas and brake pedals.

In October 2011, the Passat Alltrack was introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show. This car is based on the B7 and is designed to fill the gap between Volkswagen wagons and crossovers of the same brand. Compared to the regular Passat, the ground clearance has increased from 135 to 165 mm, the approach angle has increased from 13.5 to 16 degrees, and the exit angle has increased from 11.9 to 13.6. This car not only received all-wheel drive, but also an electronic differential lock and hill descent assistance. Thus, the Passat, in the image and likeness of the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70, turned into a station wagon with decent off-road potential, although, of course, it did not become a Tuareg. Alltrack is also available in a front-wheel drive version.

In 2012, a married couple from America set a record for efficiency on their diesel Passat. A car with a 140-horsepower engine covered 2,601 km on 73 liters of fuel. In order for the conditions of the "record" trip to be as close as possible to the real ones, the couple took 55 kg of luggage with them and were on the road no more than 14 hours a day. Now the record of the American couple is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
