It is no secret that it is now customary to build not a car, but a platform on which, if desired, you can assemble a whole bunch of different cars. This is especially true in the days when automakers are mired in incestuous marriages of convenience. Maybe, of course, for love too, but it seems to me that it’s still calculated. Take, for example, the Passat B6. Why not B7? Because B7 is a deep restyling of B6. So, the B6 was built on the PQ35 platform. And its "blood brothers" on the platform can be called a number of cars: Audi A3 second generation, Volkswagen Touran, Volkswagen Caddy, SEAT Altea, fifth generation Volkswagen Golf, second generation Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf Plus, third generation SEAT Toledo, Volkswagen Jetta, second generation SEAT Leon, second generation Audi TT, Volkswagen Eos, Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Scirocco, Audi Q3 and Skoda Yeti. An impressive list? Yes, but that's not all. The PQ35 had an extended version of the PQ46. Therefore, we add a slightly more serious Volkswagen Passat CC and Skoda Superb II to this series.
Of course, there are economic benefits from this way of building a number of cars on the same platform. But any medal, as you know, has two sides. Not everyone likes the second side of the modern approach: by and large, all these machines turn out to be very similar to each other. Externally, of course, they are all different (at least from the outside), but otherwise - almost everything is the same.
The same Passat B7 does not differ much from its predecessor. In any case, the interior.
Of course, over time, manufacturers within the same platform can change something. For example, atmospheric four-cylinder engines disappeared in the B7, but electronically controlled shock absorbers appeared.
And yet the platform well limits the flight of design thought. After a certain period of time, all the capabilities of the platform are squeezed out of it, like juice from an orange, and you have to come up with something fundamentally new. But, of course, also platform.
And then Volkswagen decided that the platform should be modular. That is, it seems to be there, but you can change not only engines, gearboxes and suspensions (which is not bad in itself), but even the physical dimensions (base and track), leaving the only possible layout with a transverse motor. And at the same time, the platform should remain a platform. This is how the Modularer Querbaukasten (“modular transverse matrix”), MQB, turned out. Here on it the new Passat is built. And a good dozen other cars are also built on it, for example, the same Skoda Superb or Audi A3. You will not argue that these are really different cars, right? Well, or another example of the MQB capabilities: the Skoda Superb station wagon has not only an increased base compared to the liftback, but also a large track, although the car is essentially the same.
