Volkswagen Tiguan mk2

We will build an overview of weaknesses, both in the designs and in the production of German crossovers, in such a way that we first study the disadvantages in the reviews of Tiguan owners on auto forums, and then predict what consequences or breakdowns they can lead to.

As for such a power plant, which is equipped with a crossover, like 1.4 TSI, the most frequent complaints of our compatriots are to the timing chain. As a rule, already by 50 thousand mileage, it needs to be replaced due to excessive stretching, which even special devices to compensate for the increase in the length of the drive links cannot level out.

The consequences for those who ignore the timely replacement of the chain can be quite significant. And the least of them is when the valves can bend as a result of jumping the timing chain drive. Further - a likely outcome may be a conflict state between pistons and valves. Then you have to change not only the valves, but also the pistons.

At the same time, there are cases of breakage of pistons from connecting rods and the latter, by definition, breakdowns in the slang of motorists, they say, connecting rods extend “hands of friendship” to negligent owners, breaking through cylinder blocks.

There are complaints that during the first tens of thousands of mileage, such a unit as an intercooler fails. True, there is nothing special and nothing to break. What can go wrong in a water radiator? Unless it can become clogged and the water circuit for cooling the air will cease to perform its functions.

As a result, the pistons are subjected to high thermal loads, and they quickly become unusable, if not completely destroyed.

The weak points of the 2 liter diesel engines that Tiguans are equipped with are particulate filters (or DPL), which clog due to long city driving in traffic jams when you have to keep the engines in idle modes. As a result, Tiguans smoke like steam locomotives, and the presence of smoke, respectively, leads to the fact that piston rings quickly coke.

Weaknesses in Volkswagen Tiguan transmissions

In fact, Tiguan owners have few complaints about mechanical, as well as automatic transmissions. Unless there are isolated cases of oil leaks due to wear or due to coarsening of the rubber chamfers of the seals.

The greatest number of complaints is about high-tech gearboxes, namely DSG robots.

The preselective units of the top DSG transmissions are the result of the development of both VAG engineers and the design team of a partner company. As for the reliability of the boxes, the joint activity was, to put it mildly, unsuccessful. And, as evidenced by the reviews, most of the problems happen due to the miscalculations of the developers. Moreover, starting from:

  • mechanical part;
  • continuing the wear of the clutches, of which, as you know, two pieces are supplied to the DSG;
  • and ending with mechatronics malfunctions.

Regarding the weaknesses of the mechanics in the design of the robot, this is a whole “bouquet” of problems that manifest themselves:

  • in extraneous transmission noise, which is the result of bearing wear. As a rule, this ailment appears by the end of the first hundred thousand run, but often it comes much earlier;
  • the inability to turn on the reverse gear, as well as put the robot on even modes. This suggests that one of the forks, namely 6/Reverse, has acquired an abnormal state for operation;
  • as for odd modes, then problems are in store for them in the form of wear on the input shaft, where the gears of these very odd gears are located;
  • the appearance of oil in the clutch housing indicates that the oil seal is covered, and often the needle bearing. At the same time, as a rule, the repair does not end with the replacement of the oil seal and bearing - replacement of the clutches is required.

As for problems with clutches, they do not require repair, because this assembly unit is disposable. Clutches cannot be repaired, but require a complete replacement if changes in operation appear in the form of:

  • vibrations at the beginning of starting off;
  • as well as during acceleration;
  • the presence of jerks when switching modes.

Regarding the weak points of mechatronics. Considering that it actually consists of two fundamentally different parts, namely hydraulic and electronic units, then the weakest link in this pair is the computer.
