VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER with the T3 index was released in mid-1979. Even then, he was spoiled by the attention of buyers, even despite the original scheme with rear and drive wheels. The car stayed on the assembly line until 1992.
The fourth generation VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER T4 appeared in 1990, the Minivan was revolutionary both externally and technically.
The simplest one is more common - the cargo version of the "Transporter" (a hard worker van with an all-metal body without glasses) or a cargo-and-passenger one. Less often - passenger 7-9-seater. Interior trim is not rich, but at a fairly high level. As a rule, delivery vehicles were equipped with the most low-power engines and a manual gearbox, and passenger vehicles, including all-wheel drive Syncro models, were equipped with more powerful power units.
The minibus Caravella (overseas name - Evroven) had many options for the layout of the cabin (6-9 seats). The finish here is already richer, all the seats are trimmed with velor and equipped with head restraints. In the basic configuration - central locking and an additional heater. The footboard of the sliding side door has acquired a ceiling light.
The flagship of the model - the luxury version of the "Caravelle" was named "Multivan". The main differences are in the layout of the cabin and equipment. In the third row, individual seats gave way to a comfortable sofa. The second row seats can be turned against the move, on the middle part they made a folding table, and the interior of the flock looks like a carriage compartment. Finishing - the richest, up to natural leather.
Engine
All cars of the family (except VR6) are with a timing belt drive. If there is any doubt about the vehicle's mileage, the belt can be replaced along with the roller(s). The factory recommendation for replacing the engine with gasoline is 120-180 thousand km, with diesel - 90 thousand km. But these figures should not be taken literally, operation in harsh conditions makes adjustments.
For safety net, intervals of up to 80 and 60 thousand km, respectively, are recommended. When the belt breaks, valve pistons are found in all diesel engines and some gasoline engines. Check with your dealer for replacement intervals using the engine code letter.
Diesel engines are surprisingly economical and well adapted to domestic fuel. Cases of fuel equipment failure are isolated and unsystematic. The only capricious adjustment of the injection pump - setting the injection advance angle is not often required. With mileage, this parameter almost never goes out of tolerance, but if a warm engine starts to work "in a black way", it is better not to postpone the work.
Suspension
Suspensions "Transporter" are reputed to be tenacious, Front - on double transverse forged levers with longitudinal torsion bars and anti-roll bar assembled on a subframe. Rear - on diagonal levers with coil springs, mounted directly on the side members of the body.
Brake system
There were several modifications to the braking systems. Cars were equipped with ABS, pad wear sensors, disc or drum brakes at the rear, conventional or ventilated discs at the front, in various combinations. In addition, the systems could be from different manufacturers - their parts are not interchangeable.
